My 2012 Class Schedule is now posted through July 2012. I work primarily with mom writers because that’s my specialty, but if this shoes does not fit you, look for new self-study classes coming soon for all types of writers across a variety of my specialty topics.

Here’s what you need to know about my classes that is new in 2012:

No price hikes. I didn’t raise my class prices even though my jaw hits the floor every time I go grocery shopping. I raised prices in August of this year, so how about we give price hikes a break with the holidays coming? (Nothing I can do about the rest of the economy, unfortunately.)

Writing & Publishing The Short Stuff

Discover Your Specialty & Launch Your Platform

Pitching Practice: Write Six Queries In Six Weeks

Micro-publishing for Mom Writers

I am now offering all four of my classes each time I teach. This means that the class sizes will be smaller, but I’ve noticed that students do better the smaller the class size, so this is a purposeful change. Also, many of my former students are in different phases of career growth and I finally got tired of them saying they wished the class that they wanted was starting sooner rather than later. Well, no more! You’ll see all the classes you want to take each time, so go ahead and take ‘em. (I am always happy to discuss timing of enrollment and payment plans with former students, so get in touch if this a concern.) Of course, new students are also welcome to contact me at any time at christina at christina katz dot com.

Classes will turn around on Tuesdays and Thursdays instead of Wednesdays. I am sure this will be no big deal but I’m saying it anyway so that continuing students can make a mental note of it.

I will continue offering scholarships in 2012. I’ve granted thousands of dollars of merit-based career development scholarships since 2006. Today, I offer two need-based scholarship for two classes respectively: Writing & Publishing The Short Stuff and Discover Your Specialty & Launch Your Platform. Next round of scholarships submissions starts on Saturday, December 3rd. Please watch this blog for details.

Please contact Abigail Green directly about her classes. Last, but definitely not least, I have thoroughly enjoyed hosting Abigail Green and her essay writing classes over the past several years. Abby has worked with many of my former students to their delight and publication success and has generously referred her students to my classes. So this change is no reflection on her absolute professionalism and teaching excellence. I am necessarily streamlining my focus to make way for a vigorous schedule in the upcoming year.

Please continue supporting Abby’s teaching and writing by e-mail subscribing to her blog Abby Off The Record now.

My classes have been growing and evolving alongside my writing career for the past ten years. If you would like to hear what my one-time and long-term students have to say about working with me, click here.

Look forward to working with you or continuing to work with you!

I just realized that, due to the forthcoming launch of The Writer’s Workout on December 6th, this Wednesday is your last chance to take classes with me or Abigail Green in 2011.

I will be announcing the line up of classes for 2012 by the end of this month.

Here are ten reasons to take one of our classes:

You want to accumulate a body of publishable work, but you are not getting there on your own.

You like taking classes, especially inexpensive classes that conclude with you creating enough work to potentially cover the cost of the class.

You get distracted easily. You need help focusing on getting your own best-quality work done.

You are bursting with ideas and/or stories you want to share. And you have so many that it’s hard to get any of them on paper intact.

You get overwhelmed by all the possible ways to “break in.” You need someone to break this process down into manageable steps for you, so you can take the steps and receive validation for your work.

You have read tons of books or attended conferences or events that get you pumped up, but then lose steam or feel overwhelmed once you try to execute what you have learned.

You are ready to see your name in print.

You want to know if you have what it takes to get started writing for publication.

You know our former students get published, create a solid track record of publishing success, and build unique platforms based on growing expertise and you also want to accomplish these things.

You are tired of talking about writing and you are ready to actually write.

Bonus reason: you might want to take a Dream Team or Micro-publish an e-book working with Christina, and you know these classes are prerequisites for her advanced level training. (The next round for both begins in January 2012.)

Are you ready? If you are, we would love to work with you.

The following classes start Wednesday:

Writing & Publishing The Short Stuff—Celebrating Five Years of Working with Mom Writers! Learn more here

Discover Your Specialty & Launch Your Platform (Not just for mom writers and not just for nonfiction writers) Learn more here

Personal Essays That Get Published with Abigail Green, Newly updated! Learn more here

Personal Essays That Get Published: Level Two with Abigail Green, Newly updated! Learn more here

Hope to work with you soon!

I’ve heard about everything from short to long pieces appearing in such terrific publications as Scholastic Parent & Child, Parents, Family Fun, Women’s Health, and a bevy of regional publications.

It’s pretty gratifying to see my students getting consistently published, I have to say. But it’s even more fun to get published alongside of them.

Here’s a couple of back-to-school pieces of mine that appeared widely recently:

Streamline The Back-To School Paper Flood in Red River Family

and

Back To School, Back To You in Valley Parent

You may have also noticed that some of my long time students with established platforms are now publishing e-books. You can learn about Judy M. Miller’s e-book, Malia Jacobson’s e-book, Krysty Krywko’s e-book, and Cindy Hudon’s e-book in recent posts in this blog.

Another batch of my student’s e-books will be rolling out by the New Year, right alongside the publication of my third book for Writer’s Digest. Yahoo!

Sharing publishing success strategies with writers is what I do. And I love what I do. I love helping my students succeed. And I enjoy my own writing for publication work, as well.

My classes are all recently updated. I collected materials to do this over the summer and I am getting a lot of positive feedback on the latest versions of my classes. I am also seeing positive results in student assignments.

If you are interested in classes with me, the next round starts on October 12th. This time I am offering Writing & Publishing The Short Stuff and Discover Your Specialty & Launch Your Platform. The next Micro-publishing class begins in January. Make sure you tackle any prerequisites you may need in October, if you have your eye on it.

If you have your eye on a Dream Team with me in the New Year, please make sure you have taken your prerequisites.

Instructor Abigail Green also has two classes coming up on October 12th: Personal Essays That Get Published and Personal Essays That Get Published, Level Two. Late fall is a great time of year to work on essay writing. Hope you can join or rejoin Abby for a class!

My offerings are always affordable and geared towards encouraging writers to inspire and empower themselves.

I understand that writing career success is a life-long process not a short-term formula or strategy. That’s why I am committed to creating empowering contexts so my readers and students can succeed over the long-haul.

It’s also why I succeed over the long-haul, because I am always learning, growing, and sharing the best of what I learn with my readers and students and encouraging them to do the same with their growing readerships.

I want you to be able to afford a class with me, and still attend a conference, buy some books for your reference library, invest in your online presence, and still have some money left for more writing career enrichment. Here’s more of what’s coming up for me this fall and beyond. I’m partnering with some awesome folks and this is just the beginning. I’ve got a steady flow of announcements and probably will continue to until I go on tour in 2012 for The Writer’s Workout, 366 Tips, Tasks, and Techniques From Your Writing Career Coach.

More Platform Advice Than You Can Shake A Stick At!

My very first self-study course, Build Your Author Platform will be part of the Writer’s Digest Premium Collection starting September 1st. For one month only, you can pay a very low price and get more platform advice and instruction than you ever imagined possible. You will save 75% percent on this bundle of helpful platform resources, so don’t miss this amazing opportunity. Subscribe to Premium Collection E-mail Notifications from Writer’s Digest so you won’t miss your chance to buy. A limited number of Premium Collections will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Don’t miss this great opportunity to expand and deepen your knowledge of author platform with experts like me, Jane Friedman and others!

Create Your Platform From The Inside-Out & The Bottom-Up!

My Discover Your Specialty & Launch Your Platform e-mail class begins October 12th. Even if you’ve read everything under the sun on platform development, it always helps to work with someone who has built a book-deal worthy author platform. I have been working with writers on platform development for years and many of them have also gone on to either land book deals of their own or to successfully self-publish. You can hear what my latest students have to say about the latest class here. I’d love to work with you!

I’m Keynoting and Teaching at the 2012 Missouri Writers’ Guild Conference April 20th – 22nd, 2012

Do you live near St. Louis? Are you member of the Missouri Writers’ Guild? If so, that’s great news because I will be visiting St. Louis for the first time as a keynote speaker, workshop presenter, and breakout session facilitator for the 2012 Missouri Writer’s Guild Conference and I’d love to see you there. Stay tuned for announcements about the conference here. In the meantime, I hope you will save the dates!

My Willamette Writers Newsletter Column Returns in January

I took a year off while I was working on The Writer’s Workout and I am happy to announce that my Willamette Writers column is coming back in January. The topic this year is 12 Forms You Can’t Earn Without Mastering. And members of Willamette Writers will have them all down by the time the year is through. Not a member? Consider joining here.

Fall Classes Begin On Wednesday, August 24th!

You may have heard rumors that I train writers to get published and earn money and that’s true. What I don’t do it train writers to be carbon copies of me. I inspire and encourage writers to discover and cultivate their own strengths so that they can find their own topics, audiences, and specialties and thrive in the gig economy. I never get tired of what I do because there is so much synergy that can be shared when writers keep the focus on creative empowerment and unique self-expression. The group mind is pretty overwhelming right now. It’s harder in some ways than it’s ever been to be a creative individual and sound your own note. But I know how to do it, I know how to teach it, and I do my best to set a good example every day.

Want to join us? See my complete class schedule here. Classes coming up include:

Writing & Publishing the Short Stuff

Pitching Practice: Write Six Queries in Six Weeks

Coming Right Up!

At least one of my former students gets published every single day of the year. Some days, many are published. Rarely does a day go by when one isn’t published. It’s kind of cool to have reached this milestone, which has come from ten years of consistent hard work teaching back-to-back classes while I’ve worked on my own writing.

In my classes, I walk students through the paces from totally unpublished to the thrill and excitement of their first clips to building up confidence and bigger and better writing credits to launching a platform and eventually even self-publishing.

Two of my long-time students have recently published e-books that serve women and families and more of my students’ e-books are rolling out soon (read about Judy’s e-book here and Malia’s e-book here).

I offer up-to-date, inexpensive classes that mom writers can take at their own pace, growing writing, selling, platform and publishing skills as they go along. The next round begins on August 24th. I’ll be offering Writing & Publishing the Short Stuff, Pitching Practice: Write Six Queries In Six Weeks, and, my latest class, Micro-Publishing for Mom Writers. Abigail Green will also be offering her class, Personal Essays That Get Published.

I hope you can join those of us who are getting happily published!

She offers two levels of classes in essay-writing: Personal Essays that Get Published and Personal Essays that Get Published, Level Two.

You won’t be surprised to hear that Abby’s students don’t just write personal essays, they write personal essays that get published.

Abby has published more than 150 articles and essays in regional and national publications including American Baby, Baltimore Magazine, Bride’s, Health and Smithsonian.

I hear my students talking about what a great instructor Abby is all the time. But don’t take my word for it. Try out her level one class for yourself. The next one begins on August 24th. Students register by August 16th. You can thank me later!

In the meantime, I asked Abby some questions about one of her favorite topics—writing essays that get published.

CK: What is it about essay writing that keeps you coming back to the form?

Abigail Green: When you’re writing about your life and your experiences, you have an endless source of material. People often ask me where I get my ideas for essays and the answer is “all around me.” I never run out of ideas.

I also like writing essays because it helps me process things in a different way. E.M. Forster, I believe, said “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?” That’s how I feel about writing essays.

I appreciate the creative outlet that essays provide. I am doing more corporate writing these days. While it pays the bills, it’s not as fun, which is why I continue to write personal essays.

CK: How long have you been writing essays for publication and what have you learned in the process?

Abigail Green: If you count op/eds as short personal essays, which I do, then the answer is since high school, when the local paper published my opinion piece about playing rock music at tennis tournaments. It was the ’80s, the era of Agassi and acid-washed jeans. I was against it, for the record.

Since then I’ve published all kinds of personal essays, from long literary pieces to health essays to humor. I’ve learned that absolutely any subject can be “essay-worthy” if it’s well written. Most essays I write, and most of my students’, are not timely or tied to news or trends in the way that reported articles are; they’re evergreen. For instance, you can publish an essay about your experience as a new mom even if your kid is 20.

CK: What are students most surprised to learn about essay writing, when they take your classes?

Abigail Green: That while essays are based in fact, you are “allowed” and even encouraged to shape the stories as you wish to make them interesting and meaningful. There’s no rule saying you have to write about events in chronological order or leave in every detail. Some of the best personal essays read like great fiction, only they’re true.

What kinds of growth have you seen in your own essay writing efforts and those of your students?

Abigail Green: In my own essays, I have seen them become less stiff and formal, more personal and creative. I attribute this largely to writing a personal blog for five years. Three 500-or-so word posts each week for five years is a LOT of writing. It’s allowed me to try new styles, generate material that later gets turned into essays, and get instant feedback from readers. I think blogging is a great practice for any writer.

As for my students, in my Level 2 class there’s an exercise where they write about the same anecdote from a “telling” perspective and a “showing” perspective. Many of them are used to writing in a certain style and not mixing things up. So it’s a thrill for some people to discover a new writing technique. It’s another tool to add to their repertoire.

When class is over, what strides are your students most proud of making?

Abigail Green: Most of them are thrilled to have at least two complete, polished essays (and cover letters) ready to send out for submission. We do a lot of revising and reslanting in class, and while essays are never truly “done,” by the end of class students have gained the confidence to send their essays out into the world. I’ve had several people get their work accepted during the class or very soon after.

Abby Green teaches Personal Essays that Get Published, Levels 1 and 2. A longtime freelance writer, her articles and essays have appeared in numerous regional and national publications. Her latest essay, “Taking a Page from My Own Book,” appears in the August 2011 issue of Skirt magazine. You can find out more about Abby on her web site, www.AbigailGreen.com, or her blog, www.AbbyOffTheRecord.com.

Summer is awesome. We are loving it around here, even with all of the mixed-up weather.

But there is no denying that my favorite time of year is back-to-school. I just love it.

And that’s why I get a little thrill thinking about the launch of the next round of classes and dream teams which are coming up soon. (Yay!)

I hope you can join Abby or me in taking a class or joining a Dream Team this fall.

We start early, so that we can fit in two waves of classes before Thanksgiving. We don’t even try to have classes over the holidays any more. (Besides, I’ll be launching my new book and I hope you can come to the online party on December 6th!)

I know it probably seems like back-to-school is still a ways off, but it will be here before we know it. So, even if you are lying on the beach or throwing the neighborhood’s biggest BBQ ever, now is the time to sign up for the classes or support groups that are going to help you get back in the groove once fall returns.

All of our offerings this fall are newly updated, so even repeat students will get a ton out of them:

The Writer Mama Every-Day-In-May Book Giveaway

I am so happy that I revived this book giveaway (even if it is something of an administrative monstrosity). Nothing could be more worthwhile, for me, than celebrating hard-working author mamas. I have been so inspired by the stories of everyone who has participated. And the inspiration continues because May isn’t over yet. So I hope you will come by and join in, if you haven’t already.

What does it take to become an author mama? If you are an aspiring author mama, you might be interested in checking out my e-book on the topic, Author Mama, How I Became A Published Author & How You Can Too.

Stick around until the end of the giveaway on May 31st—there are nine drawings left!

PacNW Authors: Apply Now For Season Five of the Northwest Author Series

Eric M. Witchey did a great job wrapping up NAS season four to very full house last weekend. I want to thank Pat Duke, Malia Laughton, Burton Haun, Alyssa MacPartland, Jane Friedman, Andi Erickson, the Friends of the Wilsonville Public Library, Writer’s Digest, Wilsonville Starbucks, and Lamb’s Thriftway for all of their help and contributions to season four. I think everyone agrees that it was our best season yet. (Not that our prior seasons were too shabby.) If you are a Pacific Northwest Author with at least one recently published traditionally published book, then you qualify to apply for one of our eight available spots for season five. Full details on the application process are available here.

Register Now For Classes That Begin In August With Myself Or Abigail Green

This fall Abby and I are both updating and enriching our classes. My classes will be more comprehensive, more chock-full of resources, and will contain more examples from experienced writer mamas than they ever have before. Our classes already turn out tons of published writers, but my goal is to make sure that every writer who takes any of my classes has every possible resource I can provide to help her get published and all in one focused, structured, manageable six-week experience. I’m looking forward to launching my updated classes in August.

Register by August 16 for classes that begin August 24:

Fall Dream Teams For Former Students Begin August 1st

I have three levels of dream teams, and the next round launches in just a short few months! My Dream Teams are a context that creates “pod-pressure” — just the right amount of support, encouragement, and accountability to help you get from wherever you are now to where you’d like to be. Participants enjoy sharing resources and cheering each other on, while still staying on course with individual goals. If you are a mom who has worked with me in the past, you can sign up for a dream team and you will be placed in one of the following groups:

Writing & Publishing the Short Stuff Article-writing Dream Team

Advanced Article-writing /Beginning Platform-building Dream Team

Advanced Article-writing & Advanced Platform-building Dream Team (Invitation Only)

Several years ago, I had a student sneak one of my classes onto a credit card without telling her husband. I’m still trying to figure out how she got her classwork done without him knowing.

Regardless, that same mom has nurtured and grown her writing career skills over the years to the point where she has become one of my most successful former students. She is rich in ideas, writings, creativity, and has become an authority in her niche.

What she understood, that perhaps her husband did not understand at the time, is the importance of micro-investing in her writing career in order to build skills and practices that pay off in the long run.

When you learn skills and put them into practice in informed ways, they do pay off over time. This applies to just about anything, of course, but many writers don’t micro-invest, which often means they don’t commit to a path, and then they don’t see the benefits of learning and growing in the short run or the long run.

In a couple of weeks, I’ll start working with writers who want to build skills and make the most of professional opportunities. These classes make great Mother’s Day gifts for moms who are ready to write or develop a specialty. I am not advocating sneaking anything past your spouse, but I am suggesting that the only way to move forward on a writing career is to jump in and start learning and practicing skills.

Classes are filling up and registration for the May 4th start date closes on April 26th. This is the last time these classes will be offered at these prices, so I hope you will take advantage of them if you are interested. The prices will be going up on Abigail Green’s classes in August as well.

I bet if you discuss taking a class with your spouse, you will be surprised at how much support you get. Asking for what you want and need is a topic I tackled in Writer Mama, How To Raise A Writing Career Alongside Your Kids, if you need a pep talk.

Here’s a list of classes that begin on May 4th:

Writing & Publishing The Short Stuff with Christina Katz

Personal Essays That Get Published, Level Two* with Abigail Green

Happy Mother’s Day, writer mamas! We’d love to work with you.
