I don't believe in writing for peanuts. If a site is offering more than that, like a decent amount of money without taking all rights, then that might be acceptable. But you can write for regional publications and typically earn more and work with editors and get your footing. This is the path I teach. There are a lot less casualties. But I can't really speak to any specific online publication. If anyone can, please chime in.

About starting with the short stuff, what is your opinion of writing for places like suite101 or associated content to get practice, bylines, and revenue from writing for the web. If you've already stated your opinion of these outlets for writermama's, sorry, and please direct me to where I can find what you wrote about it.
