Writing and Publishing the Short Stuff (Especially for busy moms!)

Finally, a nonfiction writing workshop that fits into the busy lives of moms! This class focuses on getting you into print sooner, rather than later, and without pulling all-nighters or paying a fortune in babysitter fees. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom, a working mom, or just a busy person, you will learn how to create short, easy-to-write freelance articles—a skill that will make it easier to work your way up to longer, more time-consuming freelance articles (like features and profiles) when you are ready.

You will try your pen at tips, fillers, short interviews, list articles, how-tos, and the short personal essays—all within six weeks. And you will learn to submit your work with a basic cover letter. You will learn to brainstorm ideas, understand what rights to sell, interview experts, integrate quotes and research, and rewrite your work until it’s publication-ready. Opportunities for self-assessment and self-reflection are woven into the class, and you’ll benefit from reading your classmates’ submissions.

By starting with short freelance articles, you will learn to identify multiple possibilities for your material that will strengthen your freelancer’s eye in the long run. You will receive two detailed reviews of your drafts-in-progress at weeks three and six. All the work you write in this class will be reviewed. You will understand how to approach editors, how to follow-up, and how to invoice. The instructor answers questions for the entire class, just like a traditional “live” class.

Prerequisites:

This writing class is helpful for both beginning writers who have never taken a class before as well as experienced freelancers looking to get back in the swing of writing after time not writing. If you have written a book but you need help breaking out fresh content from your specialty topic, this class is also for you. This class is perfect for moms who want to write for regional parenting magazines as well as moms with an eye towards national markets. My book Writer Mama, How to Raise a Writing Career Alongside Your Kids and The Elements of Style by Strunk & White are the required books for this class. The only other requirement is that you must be able to receive and create Microsoft Word documents to participate in this class. The instructor will send a personal introduction request form when class begins and a class evaluation at the conclusion of the class.

Class Materials:

The instructor provides class materials via e-mail in the form of Microsoft Word documents on start date of class, so students must be able to read and create Microsoft Word docs to participate. Students will be asked to provide a photo/headshot and a one-paragraph introduction on the first day of class start, which is a fun way to “meet” your classmates!

What former students say:

I love writing and I love my kids and I love how Christina helps us learn how to balance these two loves. She gives us her experience and knowledge in a well-organized, friendly and encouraging format. I firmly believe that this class has helped me uncover the writer that I really want to be.  ~ Kristin W.

Christina teaches as a wise friend of the new writer; encouraging through little steps, nudging the timid along, leaving each student thinking, “Gee, I really am a writer!” ~ Johannah B.

The WPSS workshop provided me with confidence, commitment and camaraderie. It was just what I needed to get myself to take the leap of submitting my work to publications. ~ Liz S.

As a busy mom trying to break into freelance writing with four little kids running around, Christina’s course was exactly what I needed! The feedback was great and the classroom atmosphere kept me on track. I’ll definitely be applying her lessons for years to come!” ~ Jennifer A.

Have you always dreamed of being a writer but then talked yourself out of it thinking “I can’t really do that.” Think again! This class is the perfect mix of practical information and inspiration that will get your pen moving. At the end of six weeks you will say “I am a writer.”  ~ Gwyneth W.

There are people out there who “get” the writer stuff, and people who “get” the mama stuff. But to have somebody who understands both is priceless. ~ Jennifer H.

Christina was very professional and provided a great class structure for busy moms. I learned how to manage my time as well as provide quality work. She provided practical advice and now I feel like the road to freelance publishing is not as difficult as I once thought. Can’t wait to take more classes! ~ Hallie S.

Christina’s class was a great refresher to help me improve the quality of my writing, and distinguish between the kinds of articles I can publish. She had an uncanny ability to give me the right suggestions to improve not only class assignments, but my future writing work. The success of her students is clearly a priority to her.  ~ Rhonda F.

Busy moms, are you longing to break into a career as a freelance writer? If so, I highly recommend Writing & Publishing the Short Stuff with Christina Katz. You will learn how to earn money writing fillers and short articles, how to research markets, and how to write cover letters, all while polishing your writing skills. The class is fun, and Christina is encouraging, thorough, and professional. Do something for yourself and invest in your dream! ~ Caroline Y.

I’ve been looking around at various writer’s helps on the Internet (books, Web sites, and so forth), and I’ve noticed that it all leaves me feeling a bit daunted. Your materials, on the other hand, leave me feeling “I can do this!” You are very clear about the work that it takes — the diligence needed to improve as a writer, the process of finding the right places for submission, the never-give-up attitude — but I think that one of the most valuable things about your course is the can-do attitude it imparts to your students, at least to this one. Thanks again.  ~ Caroline W.

I decided to take Christina’s Writing & Publishing the Short Stuff class because I knew I needed more than just book learning to get beyond the sporadic publishing success I’d been having. Now I’m becoming a professional freelancer with a growing list of publishing clips thanks to her teaching and coaching. Working with Christina has provided the perfect mix of professional insight, sympathetic feedback and hard-nosed prodding. I like how she acknowledges the emotions involved in pursuing publication while encouraging writers to keep an eye on productivity and moving forward. Christina has been an invaluable mentor that I look forward to taking along as I continue journeying in my writing career.~ Lara K.

Pitching Practice: Write Six Queries in Six Weeks

Okay, you’ve completed freelance writing classes, you’ve read writing and marketing books, and you have published a few articles. Now all you need are assignments, deadlines, and more checks made out to you. Or perhaps you’ve taken classes with Christina Katz and now you are ready to take your writing career to the next level.

But you’ve run into a few challenges:

  • You have plenty of ideas, but you just can’t seem to get motivated enough to pitch them to editors
  • Although you’ve written a few articles, the query writing process is still difficult because you feel like you have to reinvent the wheel each time
  • You are isolated from other writers. Not that your family and friends aren’t great. They are, but you crave the company of like-minded others
  • You feel stuck writing for lower-paying, regional markets and want to break into higher-paying, national markets

In this writing class, pitching is all you do. Over the course of six weeks, you crank out six queries, which is exactly the kind of practice you need if you want to get into the habit of landing better-paying assignments.

After you write and send six queries, you will never again ask, “What makes a strong query?” You will have developed your own style into a muscle that you can exercise over and over to obtain future assignments. Finding your rhythm, not anyone else’s, is what effective query writing is about.

Each week, you will study a successful writer’s query and practice writing your own. You will receive a three-page weekly worksheet, which will provide helpful ideas and checklists to help you systematize your query writing process and increase your productivity. You will be able to use these worksheets, along with your checklist to write targeted queries for the rest of your career.

Emphasis will be placed on developing the query-writing habit, achieving the goal of six queries written in six weeks to sent to publications that advance your career.

What former students say:

I really resisted taking this class. My queries have always been decent and I really didn’t think there was much I could do to improve them. Christina really helped me kick them up a notch! I gained a ton of confidence and really have developed a process as to what needs to be included in a query and the type of background knowledge and research I should have in place before I pitch an idea.  ~ Krysty K.

This class gave me the resources, advice, know-how and, most of all, the kick-in-the-pants I needed to confidently fire up my querying machine. I’m excited about keeping up the momentum and putting what I’ve learned into action.  ~ Christa H.

Querying is a writing muscle that can’t be developed through simply imitating someone else’s work. It has to be gained through practice – proper practice. And like gaining strength in any muscle, learning how to query requires progressive intensity. Christina Katz understands this and has constructed an excellent class that builds, week upon week. Her coaching showed me how to exercise my way to a place of real strength. After years of weak queries, I’m finally hefting pitches with muscle.  ~ Lara K.

Christina was the task master/deadline diva I needed to keep my butt in the chair. She encouraged my muse and calmed my perfectionist so I could keep typing and focus on sharpening my writing and launching my work into the world. ~ Gigi R.

Christina rocks!  She builds trust right at the beginning and sets the framework for candid, sharp and targeted feedback. Take this class! ~ Alex H.

This class is the fabulous next step for anyone who’s been writing and is now serious about breaking into the magazine market (and yes, you have to be serious). Christina provides quality instruction and lots of tips on how to break in, along with valuable marketing information. This class is a must! ~ Joanna N.

I needed Pitching Practice more than I realized. Christina taught me how to appreciate and develop successful query writing through practical exercises. Her feedback and gentle critiques helped me to have more confidence in pitching my ideas. ~ Judy M.

Pitching Practice not only changed the way I approach my professional career, it changed the way I see myself as a writer. With Christina’s kind and competent guidance, queries are no longer the monster under the desk – they’ve come up into the lamplight and settled down in comfort next to my other writing tools. ~ Sarah P.

Query writing is like establishing a good habit. If you do it enough, repetition builds success. Christina is extremely helpful in showing you good habits to develop as you move toward being a successful query writer. ~ Karen K.

This class exceeded my expectations. And, even better, it helped me exceed my own expectations. I almost didn’t take it—I didn’t think I could squeeze one more class into my frenzied schedule—but I’m tremendously happy that I did. I generated saleable queries, got invaluable feedback, and solidified my confidence and approach. And I’m ready to rock! ~ Malia J.

Christina’s exceptional class focused my thoughts to build a specialty platform plan. Her assignments challenged and helped me look deeply into lifelong experiences to build an organized plan for getting published. ~ B. Hay

Building a platform isn’t for the faint-of-heart, but the clarity I found after digging into the possibilities was an invaluable learning experience. I now have a clearly defined roadmap to follow and a better understanding of how to continue building my writing platform grounded in practical techniques rather than just dreamy possibilities. ~ C. Hines

Discovering your platform is a journey. Christina is a patient guide who encourages you with every step. ~ L. Durante

This course not only taught me more about myself and what inspires me to write, but also showed me concrete actions to take in order to establish a strong platform for my writing career. With Christina’s practical advice and informed guidance, I learned exactly what steps I need to take to reach my writing goals. ~ S. Lindsey

Before I took this class, I was struggling to identify topics that would be of interest to editors and readers. Now, I have the beginnings of a platform that will help me generate as much work as I want or need just by developing and marketing my area of expertise. ~ B. Meleski

In an uncertain publishing environment, platform has never been more important for writers. I’m so thankful to Christina for providing me with an opportunity to strategize and for helping me come up with a workable platform plan. ~ Sharon V.

Christina is a real, honest-to-goodness teacher. When I wasn’t working to my ability, she noticed, demanded more, and gave me the tools to succeed. Nobody ever gets where they’re going without a great teacher. Christina helped me find my wings. ~ Lynne S.

Christina’s course material and feedback inspire clarity and prompt action. ~ Dylan K.

Christina’s class will put you on an intense journey of self discovery, and the process is fun and helpful. I highly recommend this class to any writer interested in developing the business end of her craft. ~ Brit S.

I found this class to be much more than I expected. Don’t sign up unless you have plenty of time to devote to it (not to mention paper and ink!) because you will not want to waste the opportunity to have Christina help you find, develop, or fine tune your image and point you in the right direction. ~ Carol A.

Micro-Publishing Part One: Position & Write Your Micro-pub

Have you always wanted to serve readers on a nonfiction topic? But perhaps you either didn’t have a large enough idea or you were anxious about the commitment it takes to write and promote a full-length nonfiction book. If you are an experienced freelancer, maybe you have had a slew of ideas you know would be perfect for a home-grown readership. And if you are already an author, it’s quite possible that your last book-writing project filled your head with dozens of related and non-related e-book ideas.

Why does e-book publishing make sense? For one thing, you can test-market an idea and find out if it might be desirable as a longer book project. For another, you can write your way to a traditional book deal, profiting from your ideas as you build up a body of work. And you can spin off paying articles from e-book topics and get paid twice, once when the article is published, and again when the article drives potential readers to your e-book.

This concept is not new. I’ve seen plenty of traditional and self-published authors publish e-books. I’ve seen well-written e-books and e-books that probably should never have seen the light of day. But now that publishers are scooping up successful e-publishers, there’s no good reason to wait to write your best e-book ideas. As long as you do a professional job, you could conceivably attract an agent or publisher searching for someone to write a book on a particular topic via your self-published e-books, especially if the topic is a specialty you have clearly established.

During this six-week class, you will take one of your most marketable ideas and turn it into a 50-60 page e-book. You will clarify your readership, research and test-market your e-book topic, crowd-source and expand the value of your offering, and compose a draft of your first e-book. I look forward to working with former students who are ready to position and write their first e-books!

Prerequisites:

For experienced freelancers, prerequisites for this class are WPSS and DYS-LYP. Inexperienced writers should plan on taking 60 Ways and Pitching Practice, as well, prior to this class. You need excellent writing skills, a specialty, and a platform to make your e-book profitable in the short run. Even better, but not required, is to have an established following or fan base.

Class Materials:

The instructor provides class materials via e-mail in the form of Microsoft Word documents on start date of class, so students must be able to read and create Microsoft Word docs to participate. Students will provide a photo/headshot and a one-paragraph introduction the week prior to the class start date, which is a fun way to “meet” your classmates!

What former students say:

The process of self-publishing is fraught with doubts, questions, and uncertainty. Christina Katz to the rescue! In a six-week course, she guides students to the completion of a saleable e-book. Along the way, she provides invaluable guidance on everything from theme to content to pricing. Writers who are ready to take the self-publishing plunge and want wise counsel, encouragement, and support—take this course!  ~ Malia J.

Once again Christina has found a way to motivate and inspire writers into creating their own piece of expertise. It’s a stripped down, no holds barred, approach to moving a tiny seed of an idea into something that is ready to be self-published. Christina manages to keep the class above the hype of self-publishing and allows the space for her students to grow as writers.  ~ Krysty K.

Christina, thank you. The clarity and focus of my writing that has resulted from working with you, has made the past six weeks among the most important of my career. ~ Dylan K.

Micro-Publishing Part Two: Edit & Launch Your Micro-pub

Have you always wanted to write an e-book that would sell? But perhaps you either did not understand the rewrite process or you did not have enough support to follow all the way through. If you are an experienced freelancer, maybe you thought you could write and launch an e-book on your own, but it hasn’t happened yet. And if you are already an author, maybe you are just pulled in so many directions that you could use some guidance and support to get your own projects done.

Most writers find themselves unable to comprehend the difference between half-way decent and publishable, when it comes to their own projects. I can certainly understand this and I’ve been in these shoes before. But I’ve also been on the other side of the equation; I’ve written three traditionally published books and several successful e-books, so I can help writers understand what needs to be done to turn the dross in their drafts into publishing gold.

During this six-week class, you will get feedback on your completed micro-pub draft from the part one of this class. Only students who have successfully completed Micro-publishing Part One are invited into this class. Students work together and directly with instructor Christina Katz to get their drafts edited and polished for publication. You will engage in an educational editing process, and learn how to take your micro-pub from good to great.

We will also cover the launch process including formatting for digital publication, cover art, gathering blurbs, beta-testing, creating multi-media releases, and generating buzz. I look forward to working with former students who are ready to polish and launch their first e-books!

Christina delivers again! Micro-Publishing is awesome. With Christina’s well-executed curriculum and guidance I was able to draft, write, publish, market, and sell my first e-book shortly after the end of class!  ~ Judy M.

Christina’s lessons not only help you identify your specialty and write your e-book, they also help you create a polished, professional end project that you’ll be proud to put your name on and market.  ~ Cindy H.

60 Ways To Flex Your Content & Prosper In Your Niche

Many of my advanced students already write regularly for publication but it’s easy to get stalled for ideas or lose inspiration steam once you start writing in a niche. It’s also easy to get overloaded with ideas that are not necessarily the most timely or most potentially profitable.

If you already write for a niche audience, you know how to query, you have racked up clips, and you may have even written a book or e-book. But sometimes it’s hard to stay prolific on your own when you are adrift in a sea of your own content.

This is the class that will catapult my most advanced students to creative confidence. We will brainstorm six types of article ideas: accessible, profitable, elusive, complex, recycle-able, and popular and turn each idea into ten drafts across a variety of nonfiction forms each week.

Each student will develop six ideas and write ten different drafts for each idea every week for six weeks. We will use brainstorming worksheets to flex each idea ten ways, considering both the tried and true and exploring fresh territory. We will not finalize work from this class (because you already know how to do that). Instead, we will create a body of saleable work that will keep you busy selling for six months to a year following the conclusion of class. The instructor will review the “best of” your drafts at weeks three and six.

Emphasis on this class will be placed on generating the best possible ideas to position each student as a definitive thought leader on her topic. There has never been a better time to be a niche writer and after you take this class, you will understand why. Your little corner of the writing world should be fun, expansive, and profitable. And it will be after you complete this class.

This is a great class and Christina pushes you to stretch your idea muscles to the max. You will come away from this class with a notebook full of topics to write about that will keep you busy for a long, long time. ~ L. Seplak

This class allows you to get into the flow of your ideas while setting aside personal insecurities and worries about perfection. Christina shares a process that you can use long after the class is over to shake off the dust, explore, and dig deeper into your ideas. Become Your Own Imprint: For Serial Micro-publishers

The publishing industry is experiencing massive transformation, creating both traditional publishing opportunities and entrepreneurial opportunities for savvy, hard-working writers.

But most people approach e-book publishing backwards, thinking distribution, marketing, and promotion are the most important initial parts of the process and forgetting the importance of name recognition, content curation, and earning authority, which comes first.

Bottom line: your long-term success is determined not by how many people you know or how many people “like” you, but by how many people respect you and your work.

Successful authors know that their name is their most important commodity. They know how to listen to and serve their growing readerships. And they never get sucked into the latest get-rich quick scheme, no matter how slick. Wise authors put their readers first, their sanity second, and their bottom line third.

It takes a village to create an amazing e-book, but only a small village. And this same small village can create an e-book with the power to establish publishing career success. And, since this is the case, imagine what a series of e-books might do. Imagine what a series of excellent quality e-books might do for your career.

This class is your ticket into a community of e-book publishers. In this six-week class, we will create the plan for your series. We will discuss how to control the quality of your content, how to better serve readers with your pacing and production, and how to profit by creating a series of e-books that will thrill readers and make them eager for your next e-book.

The odds of anyone becoming the next big name author with a series of books by a traditional publisher are fairly slim. But the odds of becoming the next big name author with a series of e-books published by your own imprint are completely in your hands.

This is the class that shows the mechanics of how to use self-publishing as your path to a traditional book deal, if you still prefer one by the time you are creating a series of e-books. We’ll create a six-month to one-year plan that will help an experienced e-book author plan, write, edit, package and launch three more successful e-books under his or her name.

Serial mirco-publishing is not a class for the beginner; it’s a class for those who have spent years creating a sturdy niche and a recognizable name for themselves. Writing & Publishing the Short Stuff (Especially for Moms) + Discover Your Specialty & Launch Your Platform or 60 Ways To Flex Your Content & Prosper in Your Niche + Micro-publishing for Mom Writers are the prerequisites to this class.

My book Writer Mama, How to Raise a Writing Career Alongside Your Kids is the required book for this class. The only other requirement is that you must be able to receive and create Microsoft Word documents to participate in this class.

The Writer’s Workout is required for this class. The only other requirement for this class is that you must be able to receive and create Microsoft Word documents to participate.

Teaching is one of my favorite things to do.

I’ve been teaching back-to-back classes, both live and via e-mail, for the past 13 years.

I learn a ton from teaching and I’m always eager to learn more. I’m always eager to take what I’ve learned and use it in new ways. I do my best to share what I have learned in an organized, helpful way with my students and readers. Those who benefit most from the latest of what I have learned are my Dream Team participants.

I need to warn you though. I’m pretty cheery, but when I’m teaching, well…they don’t call me a “gentle taskmaster” for nuthin’. So if you feel like you and your writing career could benefit from a tiny boot in the caboose, then read on,  you are definitely in the right place.

Here’s what sets my classes apart from all the rest:

Reasonably Priced Many writing classes are too expensive! I am committed to keeping classes affordable. My classes are among the most affordable for the value.

Write Where You Live Classes take place over e-mail because e-mail is how writers typically communicate with editors. This means you can participate in any of my classes no matter where you live.

Accelerated Learning When you take a class with me, you’ll get positive results from your efforts. This means less time wasted “learning the ropes.” Only a seasoned professional can help you think like a seasoned professional.

Participation Required Need a gentle but persistent taskmaster? If you have trouble making time to write, my classes will help you become more proactive. Consistent effort and strategic action are the best ways to succeed in the writing biz.

Blast Beyond Blocks My classes help you increase your confidence alongside your writing and marketing skills so you can bolster your long-term success. You’ll soon become so busy meeting deadlines that you won’t have time for the blocks that can create barriers to success.

Tangible ResultsParenting, FamilyFun, Costco Connection, Parents, Pregnancy, BUST, Twins, Pregnancy & Newborn, Women’s Health, and Fit Pregnancy are just a few of the magazines students have broken into after working with me. Some former students have landed book deals when they do the necessary platform development over time.

Am I proud of my students? Heck, yeah, I am!

But I can’t take credit for all of their hard work. I’m just the teacher. You are the person who has to roll up her sleeves and do the work.
