Creative Everyday: It’s A Start

I just handed our dogs off to my husband as he ran by in crowd of Willie Fit 5K race runners. It was raining. It’s raining harder now. I admired all the folks who were committed enough to get up early and get out there a run 5K to kick of the half-marathon training season.

Some of them were fairly unfit. They were already huffing and puffing after running a half-mile mostly downhill from the school to the trail head near our house. I’m not worried about them, though.

I know from watching my husband in two half-marathons that most of those huffing and puffing joggers will be sprinting across the finish line come summer. Some of them will be amazed that they could complete a half-marathon. All of them will be grateful to Willie-Fit for helping them get in good enough shape to do it.

With writing or any other creative pursuit, the training process really isn’t much different. Training groups may not be for everyone, but they tend to work well for the people they serve, when they make the most of them.

A training group, whether for fitness or creativity, can get a person who might otherwise be fairly unlikely to join a race or cross a finish line to achieve a personal best. And the process of getting from unfit to fit is usually half the fun, if a person can let themselves enjoy it. But only those who get in the game can win. And the only person you are trying to beat is your complacent ol’ self.

How about you, going to get in any games this spring?

I’m blogging and writing a 1000 words a day (more or less) every day at the moment, which is keeping me writing fit! I’m a bit of a loner, but the idea of a writing group is appealing. However, as an Anglophone ex-pat in deepest rural France, it may be tricky to find one …

New games for me this spring include launching my blog, embarking on the great agent hunt and starting a new manuscript.

Change is in the air. Thanks for the daily inspiration!

Though I do not compete in endurance sports, I might compete again in Figure Competitions this Fall. My coach says I need a bit more muscle maturity…I’m training like a mad woman with the weights…about time for my workout today. 🙂
